Lesson 3: FROM GROSS TO SUBTLE POWER (Uy lực thô và tế)

Lesson 3: FROM GROSS TO SUBTLE POWER (Uy lực thô và tế)

In previous articles, I have analyzed the nature and correlation between gross and subtle elements. Now I would like to move to another category: “ascendant power”

The activation of gross and subtle elements creates power or energy. Let say people make physical movement to generate gross power for walking, standing, lying and sitting. From this serious consciousness, they attain stately gait (for men) and lithe and graceful movement (for women). Likewise, each of their physical movements make others impressed and this is called the “ascendency”.

The stupa of Visakha in Savatthi

In the Buddha’s time, Buddhist laywoman, Visakha, in her teenage had attracted the admiration from the chief patron of a rich family for her lithe and graceful movement on a rainy day. He asked why she did not run like her maidservants but walked leisurely in the rain. Visakha replied that she could not run because an educated girl would never lose the manner of a female though being got wet by rain. Thanks to it, Visakha got attention from his family who was looking for a good daughter-in-law.

Another Indian anecdote goes that once upon a time, the country’s officials were looking for a boy with good appearance to bring to the throne. Among thousands of boys being watched when they were eating, the grand mandarin paid special attention to a boy who was the only one that ate moderately without sticking out his tongue or making chomping sound. Then boy was chosen and became a great king, looked up to by everyone.

The 14th Dalai Lama at his young age

This is called the energy of gross elements (gait, eating manner) which adds to boost the substance quality of the subtle elements (consciousness). We show no doubt over the case of Visakha since she was raised in a respectable upper class family. But what about that poor boy? Why did he have such a unique, proper manner at his age? His manner is attributed to good causes sown in his previous life which grows up in his present life. There also have videos or films about ten-year-old boys who are the manifestation of deceased lamas who can sit stately in vajra posture on the throne for hours to bestow blessings upon Buddhist followers.

Those paradigms indicate a correlative influence between gross and subtle energy of our elements. Once subtle elements are intensified to the maximum level (differently in each individual), there will form a so-called “ascendant power” (a manifestation of inner power). An ordinary person cannot have this power unless he gets supported from circumstance or environment. This power can be intensified by external gross elements. Let say a person with a knife in his hand can make others terrified; a swindler under cover of police costume and fake ID card can easily cheat gullible people; or a boorish man still has a “power” over hot girls by lots of money, etc.

He was born without arms or legs but he got married to a beautiful woman and has a wonderful marriage.

On the other hand, highly intensified subtle energy will create ascendant power in more clearly way. For instance, a loyal and devoted mandarin can be held in high esteem by many people despite his weird appearance (gross elements). We can tell the case of famous scholar of the early fourteenth century Mac Dinh Chi (King Tran Anh Tong’s time, Vietnam); Yen Ying in the Spring and Autumn Period (春秋時代, Chūnqiū Shídài) (China); or Regent Liú Yōng in the time of Emperor Qianglong. The history of mankind has witnessed similar cases. Vietnam has lately welcomed a talented, inspirational speaker named Nick Vujicic. Nick was born without arms or legs but he got married to a beautiful woman and has a wonderful marriage.

People can strengthen their ascendency by good or bad intention

An ordinary person is not necessarily to be a famous figure but he manages to overcome physical deformity thanks to the enhancement of substance quality. Local medias have reported hundreds of cases of deformed men who still can get married to attractive girls. It is because of good characters like good-naturedness, determination and willingness they have obtained thanks to the accumulation of subtle elements’ energy.

Generally, people can strengthen their energy by good or bad intention. With bad intention, they harm others by cunning trick to increase their power. The gangsters often take robberies, murders or kidnaps as the means to increase their scope of influence. Most of them make use of gross elements such as weapons, money, illegal transactions… until these elements completely run out. There comes the time when they are standing on the edge of doom. The more important they are, the bigger destruction and suffering they may cause to their homeland and to the world as well. The world has ever seen two tragic wars launched by two infamous figures like Hitler, Mussolini.. who are thirst for being a global ruler.

A regular training of mind and virtue plays as a role to levering up external gross elements

On the contrary, good attention will help bring benefits to many others, to the whole nation and then spread out to the world. Mahatma Ghandi is among the world’s greatest men. His movement of non-violent resistance had forced the British to remove the colonial rule in India and brought independence back to his country. A regular training of mind and virtue plays as a role to levering up external gross elements. After failing to request the King to execute seven dishonest courtiers, Chu Van An (1292 – 1370) resigned and returned to his homeland to open a training center. He had trained many talented for the nation among whom are Le Quat and Pham Su Manh who then held high position in Tran Dynasty.

Logically, gross and subtle energies are correlative and interdependent. They turn out a power called “ascendency” once they are exploited at maximum level. There are different types of power but they all can be divided into two categories: (1) Ordinary intellectual power and (2) Extraordinary intelligent power. We will connect to these two powers from others depending on our mind. If we have ordinary narrow mind, it is appropriate for others to use heavy impure gross elements’ intellectual power to make us overwhelmed or uncomfortable. It is also useless if people use pure subtle elements’ intelligent power directly with us because it is obstructed by the wall of gross elements (i.e our narrow-mindedness), thus cannot connect to our mind. Both cases have no use anyway. That’s the reason why Laozi, a master of non-substance subtle elements’ energy, warned: “One should refrain from narrow-minded thinking. One should refrain from the exposition of his own talent. One should refrain from aggression.”

Wise people do not accept ordinary intellectual power for its temporariness and fast exhaustion caused by external conditions and environment. A historical anecdote has it that To Hien Thanh was chosen for the regentship of a King of Ly Dynasty. When he was ill, he got special care from an official named Vu Tan Duong. Another official named Tran Trung Ta rarely visited him because he was busy with royal duties. When being asked about the successor of his position, To Hien Thanh at once recommended Tran Trung Ta. This is because he has a visionary on the real talent and loyalty of Tran Trung Ta, i.e he can foresee the subtle energy of this man. After To Hien Thanh died, the royal court did not take his advice and sent Vu Tan Duong to take the position of To Hien Thanh as a regent.

The exhaustion of external gross elements will push the internal subtle elements into turbidity. So how to use the pure secret essence to create energy’s power?

The choosing of Vu Tan Duong means they accepted ordinary intellectual power which is less of subtlety. This power is covered heavily by impure gross elements thus cannot be helpfully for others. It cannot help others adapt themselves to changing circumstances, have actions aligned with words, or make right decisions on the right time and right goal. This is the reason why the Ly Dynasty began to fall in turbulent time and finally collapsed because the young emperor Ly Cao Tong was not taught appropriately.

The exhaustion of external gross elements will push the internal subtle elements into turbidity. So how to use the pure secret essence to create energy’s power? Next article will describe in detail.

    Dear Guru,

It seems to me that these have a lot to do with up bringing and with social standing. Many poor are not taught to behave in a high class situation where high class would also be out of place in a poor environment. Judgement is everywhere. Thank you for this article. I figure there is going to be someone somewhere that is unhappy with how I appear, act, speak, fell, what i do, or even what I don’t do. I am doing the best I can to be a better me each day and that’s all I can ask of myself. Om Mani Padme Hum

  5. Boying Baguio says:

    Dear Holy Guru,

My name is Tantra Maruta, from the island of the Philippines.

    My greetings to you,

A warm and joyful moments to all brothers and sisters in

It has been a great article reflecting someone’s real inner worlds that could lend an influence to other beings. Just a few days ago, the local election of officers in communities all over the place of our country has been held. Such event plays a big mark on our calendar since people have different strategies and ways of preparation. Though, it doesn’t go every year that it only happens in 3 years for the local, and 6 years for the national, it gives a ground breaking records that it seems more exciting than Christians yearly Christmas or Holy Weeks. The local election goes with a leading man called Barangay Captain, and 7 succeeding members called Councils. Whoever been elected by the people will serve as a leaders or officers for the next 3 years until another election day will again be held.

As I said, people has their own way of making this day pass. Those who are preparing their selves to be elected are getting tense as the days approach. Not only inside tense, but the outer environment. It grows negative vibes in everywhere to the sense that their taking things personally. The supposed friendly neighbor competition turns out to be a near war or even war to some parts. Taking lives through gun shooting with a hired assassins is not a new story or it seems that it has already been a part of this events. It may not be in all parts, but mostly I think, especially in some rural areas that are away from the cities or wherein security of arm forces can hardly be reach. Other’s strategies is what they call it vote buying. They make all means, unpleasant or pleasant, only to have the position. Money goes all over like a rain drops when the last few days or few nights before the given date of election. I really wander why do people makes situations like it. Making risk of everything only to have the position. A position for power to others.

As I look at things and while I am reading this article, I came to a point of realizing things how power can be gained and be used in a purposeful manner. Power seems to be abused nowadays. Thus, turning out to have a bad meaning or definition. Being advantage over others or having the manipulative sense over many, that can be a power. To be precisely admired, being appreciated in good deeds, to have the capability to influence others in doing good, to get the trust and can give comfort, that, I can see is also a power. By that I mean, to exert or radiate an energy that could give affection to other is certainly a power. That is according to the article, it is called ascendency. Unknowingly by many, as what has been detailed from the article, it comes out from the inner part of someone’s whole being. It is the inner nature of the individual that give rise to that power, it is where that thing is being born. We have within an innate gross and subtle elements that creates our own individual power.

I can’t keep on thinking how wonderful it is if only those who are candidates for running into a position in my country would learned how to have a power that cannot be bought by money nor cannot be taken through taking lives or killings. If only they will learn how to cultivate their innate seed of power within them, from the start long ahead before their candidacy. Humans are humans, no one has been born different in neuron’s nature from the others. Everyone of us has this gross and subtle energies and we are capable to express in pleasant ways wherein everyone will be touched. We don’t need moneys to get power, neither rude situations. There was once I read emphasizing the usage of prayer in spreading peace around the world. Where leaders all over the planets are busy buying guns and ammos, tanks, negotiating about how to win a war against another. When the only thing we need is to light a candle and together, hand in hand, and bow for a prayer to manifest kindness and understanding. If only we can spend short moment, all and everyone, teaching and reaching each other to cultivate the inner power that has been lying into our deeper sense, then surely no power can be misinterpreted, abused, misguided.

My hope and wish that the goodness of everyone’s inner seed of power will be enriched and sooner blossoms like a lotus that gives beauties in the world. Thus, all beings will give inspiration and likewise be inspired to each other’s life a meaningful existence.

    Om Mani Padme Hum

  9. Bishnu Prasad Das says:

    Respected Guru Ji,

Nice topic with talent hunt by supreme power accordingly  Lord Buddha. Vishaka..the dynamic lady , the Buddhist  lay woman. I got an opportunity to know details about Vishaka .

    Collected from Dharma Books…..

“Visakha was the devout and generous daughter of a millionaire. When she was only seven years old, the Buddha visited her birthplace. Her grandfather, hearing of the Buddha’s visit, advised Visakha to go out and welcome him. Though she was so young, she was religious and virtuous. As such, immediately after hearing the Dharma from the Buddha, she attained the first stage of sainthood.

When she was fifteen years old, some Brahmins saw Visakha and thought she would be an ideal wife for their master Punnavaddhana, the son of a millionaire named Migara. Visakha possessed the five kinds of feminine beauty: beautiful hair, a beautiful figure, beautiful bone structure, beautiful skin which was smooth and golden in colour, and youthfulness. Accordingly, they made arrangements for Visakha to be married to Punnavaddhana.

On her wedding day, her wise father gave her some advice under these ten headings:

    1. A wife should not criticise her husband and parents-in-law in front of other people. Neither should their weaknesses or household quarrels be reported elsewhere.

    2. A wife should not listen to the stories or reports of other households.

    3. Things should be lent to those who return them.

    4. Things should not be lent to those who do not return them.

    5. Poor relatives and friends should be helped even if they do not repay.

    6. A wife should sit gracefully. On seeing her parents-in-law or her husband, she should respect them by rising from her seat.

    7. Before taking her food, a wife should first see that her parents-in-law and husband are served. She should also make sure that his servants are well cared for.

    8. Before going to sleep, a wife should see that all doors are closed, furniture is safe, servants have performed their duties, and that parents-in-law have retired. As a rule, a wife should rise early in the morning and unless she is sick, she should not sleep during the day.

    9. Her parents-in-law and husband should be treated very carefully, like fire.

    10. Her parents-in-law and husband should be given the respect due to devas.

From the day Visakha arrived in Savatthi, the city of her husband, she was kind and generous to everyone in the city and everyone loved her.

One day, her father-in-law was eating some sweet rice porridge from a golden bowl when a monk entered the house for alms. Although her father-in-law saw the monk, he continued to eat as if he had not. Visakha politely told the monk, “Pass on, Venerable Sir, my father-in-law is eating stale food.”

For a long time Visakha’s father-in-law had been unhappy at her because she was a devout follower and supporter of the Buddha while he was not. He was looking for a chance to break off the marriage between his son and Visakha, but her conduct was faultless. Now he saw his chance. Misunderstanding Visakha’s words, he thought she had brought disgrace to his family.

He ordered Visakha to be expelled from the house, but she reminded him of her father’s request to eight clansmen. Her father had told them, “If there be any fault in my daughter, investigate it.”

The millionaire agreed to her request and summoned those eight clansmen to come and investigate whether Visakha was guilty of rudeness. When they arrived he secretly told them, “Find her guilty of this fault and expel her from the house.”

Visakha proved her innocence by explaining, “Sirs, when my father-in-law ignored the monk and continued to eat his milk-rice porridge he was not making merit in his present life. He was only enjoying the merits of his past actions. Was this not like eating stale food?”

Her father-in-law had to admit that she was not guilty of being rude.

There were other misunderstandings after this, but Visakha was able to explain to her father-in-law’s satisfaction. After these incidents, her father-in-law began to realise his error and to see the great wisdom of Visakha. At her suggestion, he invited the Buddha to their house to give teachings. On hearing the discourse he became a sotapanna (first stage of sainthood) .

With wisdom and patience, she succeeded in converting her husband’s household to a happy Buddhist home. Visakha was also very generous and helpful to the monks. She built the Pubbarama monastery for the monks at great cost. Immense was her joy when the Buddha spent six rainy seasons there.

In one of the discourses that the Buddha delivered to Visakha, he spoke of the eight qualities in a woman that bring her welfare and happiness in this world and the next: “Herein, Visakha, a woman does her work well, she manages the servants, she respects her husband and she guards his wealth. Herein, Visakha, a woman has confidence (saddha) in the Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha; virtue (sila); charity (caga); and wisdom (panna).”

Being a woman who had many talents, Visakha played an important role in various activities amongst the Buddha and his followers. At times, she was given the authority by the Buddha to settle disputes that arose amongst the nuns (bhikkhunis). Some Vinaya rules of discipline were also laid down for the nuns when she was called in to settle their disputes.

Visakha died at the ripe age of one hundred and twenty.

When we realize the truth and leave all our misunderstandings…we must win for serving better than before….Dharma and Karma all are inside the mind and heart…we have to implement all as per our positive attitude. To follow or Not to follow is depend upon our consign. Good behavior for others can return you a positive response…. as per Newton’s law “Every action has equal and opposite reactions”

When some people were searching a handsome boy for the throne ( to be the future King of that state) They called so many young boys and arranged a common interviews without the knowledge of the boys…when they eating….grand mandarian paid special attention and select a boy with his soberness , quality of eating, way of sitting and many more things. Like Visakha’s  action when she was walking in the rain instead of running like her maid servant. Education, Culture and self confidence as well as parents proper education made a child good or bad. Parents are the first teacher of our life, then Teachers. Buddha Dharma    is an  unique Dharma   where we can   find everything within  five English letters…P E A C E …..If you get peace then you got everything in the world…..your desire runs faster than your mind….control  your desire through Buddhism . There are so many examples in our dharma…..we should just realize and follow it, everything will be solved automatically.

    With all my regards,

    Om Mani Padme Hum.

    Bishnu Prasad Das,

  12. Dear Holy Guru,

I am happy to read your article “lesson 3: from gross and subtle power”.

I would like to express my deep gratitude to you for your teachings on this lesson. I have learned that both gross and subtle elements which can create their own power and make an effect on others. The energy of gross elements (gait, eating manner and so on) adds to boost the substance quality of subtle elements (consciousness). And from the consciousness, they attain stately gait and graceful movements which make others impressed and admire. But the exhaustion of external gross elements will push the internal subtle elements into turbidity.

I am eager to learn how to use the pure secret essence to create energy’s power. I am looking forward to reading your next article.

I also rejoice in the good deed of Mat Hue Phap who has made the great effort to translate your article into English. Her nice translation supports to spread your teaching all over the world for the benefit of all beings.
